3-20-2020 JOB: FIA Interim Forester

The Tennessee Division of Forestry is seeking entry-level candidates to fill a FIA Interim Forester position. This position offers the option of Crossville or Knoxville base-station location. Following one year of satisfactory performance and FIA certification, the individual may be reclassified as FIA Forester.

FIA Interim Forester
Cumberland or Knox County (Crossville or Knoxville, TN)

Application registry will be open April 1 - 18, 2020

Job Description:

This position is with the Tennessee Division of Forestry (TDF) Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program. This FIA unit is part of a nationwide U.S. Forest Service program that collects, processes, analyzes, evaluates, and publishes comprehensive information on forest resources. Field-based measurements occur on permanent plots located on a systematic grid across public and private ownership. FIA foresters collect data about tree measurements, forest health parameters, understory vegetation composition, habitat types, down dead woody material, silvicultural practices, natural disturbances, and land ownership.

The FIA Interim Forester works in a two-person crew and reports to the FIA Program Specialist. The FIA Interim Forester will primarily work from either the Crossville or the Knoxville work stations. However, plots are located statewide, and foresters may be sent to assist data collection in other areas of Tennessee on an as-needed basis. FIA foresters must be willing to work in challenging terrain, travel to remote plot locations (sometimes overnight), and plan their work according to weather conditions. The work schedule has built-in flexibility during the Monday-Friday work week to accommodate weather-related impediments, and some weekend and overnight travel may occur.

Data is collected to defined standards, and data quality is confirmed by the U.S. Forest Service. Standards of performance must be demonstrated annually to maintain data collection certification. The Forest FIA Specialist will provide training and support during the certification process. Loss of certification could result in job termination.

Wood manufacturing plant for sale in Knox County
From: Tom Garber, President and owner, Precision Pine, Inc. Re: Sale of wood manufacturing plant outside of Knoxville, Tennessee Before I sign on with a broker to sell our building and machinery, I am trying to find a buyer for a direct sale. I am sending this letter to people who may be interested in expanding their current operations, or who may know of other parties that might be interested in the sale. Precision Pine has been manufacturing all wood spiral stair kits for 25 years. Our website is www.spiralstaircase.com. Before the recession we were manufacturing well over 250 kits per year. Each kit averages about 500 to 600 pounds of wood. I am disclosing this information to give you an idea of our facility’s production capacity. We are still selling spiral stairs, but the since the recession our orders have steadily dwindled. Without a lot of work on my part, the company has little value more than its assets. I am 73, and at this point would rather expend my energy doing other things. The building, at 7322 Hodges Ferry Road, Knoxville, 37920, was built in 1977. It has 10,000 square feet which includes several hundred square feet of offices. The building is in normal condition for its age. The machinery is all standard industrial woodworking equipment, and has been regularly maintained. The hub of our operations is a Thermwood 4-axis CNC router with a programmable aggregate head. Saws, jointers, planers, shapers, sanders and a powered clamp carrier make panels that go to the router. We work in most of the popular hardwoods, but much of our raw material is Southern Yellow Pine. We buy this wood graded to our own custom specifications and a moisture content of 19%. We have a 6 MBF dehumidification kiln to dry this wood down to 8% MC before it goes into the plant. We have a 1200 amp, 440 volt three-phase electrical service. Part of the shop is served with two 30 foot, 100 amp bus ducts with seven outlets. All except several 110 volt machines are hardwired with starters and disconnects. Compressed air is permanently piped to most of the shop. If you have any interest in this facility please call me at 865-573-5322. I am usually in between 10 am and 2:00 pm. You can also email me at my office, tgarber@precisionpine.com, or my home, tgarbert@bellsouth.net. I would be happy to send you a complete machinery list and/or let you tour the plant. Sincerely Tom Garber
